Description of the attraction

Saratov State University includes a whole architectural complex of educational buildings or, as students say, a university campus.

It all started in 1909, when Nicholas II approved a bill to open a university in Saratov (tenth in Russia). On the day of the official opening of the university (December 6, 1909), a liturgy was held in the New Cathedral and a procession took place in the amount of twenty-five thousand people (city authorities, clergy and ordinary residents) to consecrate the construction site. The most suitable place for building was Moscow Square.

In 1910, construction began on the main four buildings of the university. The project and construction were entrusted to the talented Kazan architect K. L. Myufke. Inspired by Karl Ludwigovich, he did all the main work personally, trusting only three closest assistants to supplement and control the construction process.

In 1914, the Imperial Nikolaev University, which was located in temporary premises, moved to four new buildings, which formed an architectural complex. Later, in 1952, buildings of the fifth building (architect N. K. Usov) entered the ensemble of K. L. Mufke and in 1957 - the building of the scientific library (architect Yu. V. Istomin)

The SSU architectural complex is a unique architectural monument and the pride of Saratov residents.

On May 23, 2009, in front of the main building of Saratov State University, a 4.5-meter monument to Sts. Cyril and Methodius, the founders of Russian writing. The bronze statue of the saints immediately became a real attraction on the university campus. The sculptor of the monument is A. Rozhnikov.
