Description of the attraction

Belomorsk regional museum of local lore "Belomorsk petroglyphs" was created thanks to a group of enthusiasts, which was engaged in the creation of a public local history museum in Belomorsk. Thanks to the active work of this group, in 1961 the first exposition was opened in the museum.

Under the leadership of Yu. A. Savvateev, archaeologists in the Belomorsk region in 1963 and 1965 found a large number of rock carvings - petroglyphs. They were created about 6 thousand years ago in the Neolithic era by ancient fishermen and hunters. During the years of this discovery, the construction of a protective pavilion began over the group of rock inscriptions "Demon Tracks", which was discovered by A. M. Linevsky. In 1968 the construction was completed and a small exposition was opened, which was dedicated to archaeological finds and monuments of Karelia. It was in this year that the Museum got its name - "White Sea Petroglyphs".

Today, the museum's collection includes ethnographic materials (household items of Primorye residents, tools of trades and labor, applied arts, clothing) and archaeological collections. Of particular interest are the collections: tools made of stone from the Neolithic era, items of seaside women's clothing, cult copper-cast items, copper dishes of the 19th-20th centuries, photographs of coastal residents from the 19th - early 20th centuries. 20th century

Exposition "Sea culture of the Pomors" end of the 19th century - beginning of the 20th century For 20 centuries it has been housed in a floating workshop, which is located at the pier of the seaport of Belomorsk. The exhibition consists of several parts: "Trade relations", "Hunting and fishing trades", "Navigation schools of Pomorie", "Shipbuilding", "Centers of the Pomor Coast". In the exposition you can see items of traditional craft, trace their historical formation and development. The exposition presents documents, photographs, fishing tools, models of ships, household items from seaside villages of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

One of the rarities of the museum is the "Plan of the Shizhenskaya village" (1852), in which the names of all homeowners are written. Also at the exhibition you can see a compass-mother, the book "Course of Guidance" and an album of lithographs "Views of the Solovetsky Monastery", 1884, etc. Due to its location at the pier, tourists often come to the exposition.
