Description of the attraction
Changgyeon Palace first served as the summer residence of the rulers of the state of Goryeo, and later became one of the Five Great Palaces of the Joseon era. The palace complex was built by King Sejong the Great for his father, Taejon. In 1483, during the reign of King Sungjong, the palace complex was rebuilt and expanded.
During the period of Japanese colonization, the Japanese built a zoo, a botanical garden and a museum on the territory of the palace complex. In 1983, the botanical garden and zoo were relocated. However, the palace complex was badly damaged during the Japanese occupation; today, not all objects have survived.
Guests will be interested to look at the main gate of the palace, Honhwamun, which was built in 1484. In 1592, during the Japanese invasion, the gate was burned down and only rebuilt in 1616. Honghwamun Gate is listed as a National Treasure of Korea at number 384.
Outside the gate, as soon as guests pass through it, they will immediately see the Okcheongyo Bridge, which was built about 500 years ago. The height of the bridge is 9, 9 m, width - 6, 6 m, the bridge is supported by double arches. The bridge is also listed as a national treasure of Korea at number 386.
You should definitely visit the main hall, where official receptions and royal banquets were held - Myeongjongjong, and the Queen's Pavilion - Tongmyeongjong, which, it is worth noting, is the largest building of the Changyeong Palace.
There is a Chundangzhi pond on the territory of the palace. Walking through the palace complex, you can see stones engraved with religious inscriptions.
