Description of the attraction

In the western part of the Aegean Sea lies the small Greek island of Skopelos (part of the Northern Sporades archipelago). It is one of the most picturesque and greenest islands in Greece. Every year, a huge number of tourists come here to admire the stunning natural landscapes and relax on the magnificent beaches. You will find a lot of interesting sights on the island.

The name "Skopelos" is also the administrative center and the main port of the island. The city is located in a picturesque bay, in the form of an amphitheater, going down the hills to the very shore of the sea. Narrow cobbled streets and alleys, snow-white houses with roofs covered with red tiles, balconies entwined with flowers, fountains and numerous stairs leading to the top of the hill give the city a special charm and create a unique atmosphere of comfort. The tourist infrastructure of the city is well developed. Skopelos has a good selection of excellent hotels and comfortable apartments, while the excellent restaurants and taverns, mostly located on the waterfront, will delight you with traditional Greek cuisine.

At the top of the hill overlooking the city, you can still see the ruins of the Venetian fortress (Castro), which was built on the site where the ancient Acropolis was located in ancient times. Here is also the Church of St. Athanasius - the oldest temple on the island, built in the 11th century on the foundations of an ancient sanctuary with magnificent 16th century frescoes. The top of Castro offers stunning panoramic views of the island and the Aegean Sea.

The city is famous for a huge number of churches and chapels. Most of them only open on certain holidays. You should definitely visit the Church of the Virgin, the monastery of Zoodochos Pigi and the Church of the Archangel Michael, and in the vicinity of the city - the monasteries of St. Rigin and Evangelistria. Local attractions include a small Ethnographic Museum.

Skopelos is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the Aegean Sea, and is also a very popular Greek resort.
