Description of the attraction
Probably the most visited sights of Lucerne are two wooden bridges - Sprobrücke and Chapelbrücke, located on the Reuss River not far from each other.
The history of the Sprobrücke Bridge dates back to the 13th century. Then it was small and only reached an island on the river, where water mills rose. In 1408, it was completed to the opposite bank of the Royce, where the city's most famous bakeries were located. Accordingly, the bridge could easily deliver flour directly to the kitchens to cooks and pastry chefs. Well, the millers threw the waste from the production directly from the bridge into the river, which is why they called him Myakinny. In the middle of the 16th century, a flood occurred in Lucerne, as a result of which the Sproerbrücke bridge was also damaged. It was restored, and a few years after the reconstruction, it was expanded, adding to it a neat chapel of the Virgin Mary with an acute-angled red roof topped with a weather vane.
Thousands of tourists visit this bridge every year to admire the original triangular-shaped frescoes placed under the roof slope. The artist Kaspar Meglinger is considered to be their author. He worked on a series of 67 paintings for 9 years in the first half of the 17th century. They are written on wood panels and are united by one theme, popular in the past centuries. A canvas, broken into fragments, called "The Dance of Death" appears before the stunned spectators. Death gathers representatives of all classes and leads into oblivion. Even the powerful of this world - dukes, noble ladies, kings, scientists, priests - cannot escape from it. Only one fresco depicts Jesus Christ - the only one who was able to overcome death.
