Description of the attraction

The Church of the Ascension of the Lord is located in the Loknyansky district of the Pskov region. The construction of the church took place in 1759 with the personal funds of a landowner named Adrian Alekseevich Abryutin. The newly built church was close to the Baroque style, but the three-tiered bell tower was decorated in the style of a fairly late classicism, because it was built much later than the church building itself.

In the Church of the Ascension of the Lord there were three thrones, the first of which was consecrated in the name of the Ascension of the Lord, which is why it was the most important, the second throne was consecrated in the name of the Holy Great Martyr Paraskeva Friday, and the third throne - in honor of the Holy Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It should be noted that at one time there was a fairly ancient icon in the church called “The Holy Great Martyr Paraskeva”, made in the ancient style of “strict Byzantine writing”.

The temple bell tower was also built of bricks and was listed not far from the church building. There were six bells on it; the largest bell weighed 18 pounds and 36 pounds, and the second largest bell weighed 14 pounds and 37 pounds. The weight of the other four bells is unknown.

There was a cemetery not far from the temple, where two slabs made of stone have survived to this day. An inscription was engraved on one of the slabs, which said that Guards Colonel Nikolai Alexandrovich Navrotsky, who was born on April 19, 1842 and died on June 12, 1913, was buried under the slab. Not so long ago it was established that this man was the builder of the parish school of the Church of the Ascension of the Lord. On the second slab there was an inscription that under it was the burial place of Ilya Nikolayevich Klakachev - the captain, who was born on October 18, 1834, and died on November 9, 1889.

In the parish, a wooden chapel was located in one of the villages called Red Hill, namely in the church cemetery. There were no services in the chapel - the only exception was Trinity Saturday.

There were no almshouses, hospitals or parish guardianship at the Church of the Ascension of the Lord. In the middle of 1899, the opening of a parish school took place, the building for which was built at the expense of the local landowner, as well as retired colonel Nikolai Alexandrovich Navrotsky; a small part of the amount allocated for the construction was allocated from the treasury of the Holy Synod. It is known that in 1910, 12 girls and 45 boys were trained in the parish school.

According to local stories, the church was closed in the 1940s and is currently not operational.
