Description of the attraction
One of the attractions of the Zolochiv district, Lviv region is the Pomoryansky castle - a monument of history and architecture.
The Pomorian Castle was built in the 16th century on a hill at the confluence of the Makhnovka River with the Zolotaya Lipa River, on the site of a wooden fortress, which was founded in the 15th century. nobleman Nikolai Svinka. Initially, the Pomoryan Castle was a rectangular two-storey building with round corner towers and a small enclosed courtyard.
Erected in the southwestern part of the city, the castle was covered on three sides by a number of defensive walls, ponds, swamps and the waters of two rivers - Makhnovka and Zolotaya Lipa. It played a very important role, as it acted as a defensive structure during the repeated raids of the Tatars, Turks, and Romanians on the Galician lands.
It was possible to get to the territory of the castle using a drawbridge through the entrance gate, which was located in the center of the northern wing. In 1498-1506 the castle and the village were destroyed. In the first half of the XVI century. by order of the Podolsk governor Jan from Siena, a new stone castle was built, which was the favorite resting place of King Jan III Sobieski. In the middle of the XVII century. the castle was destroyed in turn by the rebellious Ukrainian Cossacks and peasants, in 1675 - by the Turks, and in 1684 - by the Tatars, but by 1690 the castle was restored.
After the death of King Jan III Sobieski, the building fell into disrepair and gradually collapsed. The last major reconstruction of the Pomorian castle was carried out at the beginning of the XX century. Yuri Pototsky, who turned the medieval fortress into a luxurious manor. Today, despite the deplorable state of the building, from the old Pomoriansky castle, there are two two-storey buildings - east and south, as well as a round corner tower with a hipped roof. There is a gallery in the building located on the side of the courtyard.
