In the Chinese province of Liaoning, this city is the second largest city, but tourists from different countries and, first of all, from Russia, know it better than anyone else. The history of Dalian today begins a new page related to the leisure and entertainment industry, and it is this industry that is actively developing in the region.
From Far to Dalian
The modern name of the city sounds absolutely in Chinese, but it is a transformation of the Russian word “distant”. It was the settlers from the Russian Empire who founded their settlement in these places. Considering its remoteness from its historical homeland, nostalgia for Russia and other factors, residents gave the city the name Dalny.
Before the arrival of the Russians, Chinese fishermen lived on these lands, and their small village was called Tsinniva. Russian settlers did not seize, did not conquer, but rented a piece of Chinese territory. Dalian was the name of the bay, on the shore of which the city of Dalniy was located.
New city Dalniy
The Russian Empire spent significant financial resources on the construction of the city, the city was built from scratch, therefore it had a chic layout and beautiful architectural structures.
In addition to public and residential buildings proper, a port was built and equipped, thanks to which the development of the city proceeded at a high pace, and the population increased. A new page in the history of Dalian is associated with the Japanese, who received this city after the victory in the Russo-Japanese War, until 1945 Dalian was under the jurisdiction of Japan.
Interestingly, the city was liberated by Soviet troops, and until 1950 it was once again leased, now from the USSR, and then donated to China. So the history of Russian Dalian ended, the Chinese period of life began.
At first, the Chinese authorities decided to unite it with Lushun, naming the new administrative-territorial entity Luda. But in 1981, everything returned to normal, Luda was renamed Dalian, and the former city of Lushun remained one of the districts of the city.
Today Dalian is a modern seaside resort with a developed infrastructure, excellent sanatoriums, luxurious opportunities for recreation and treatment. There are still many Russians here, but now as tourists.
