Many people dream of getting to this American city, located in the southern part of California, on the Pacific coast. But, first of all, it attracts people associated with the world of cinema, because it is here that the famous Hollywood is located. At the same time, the coat of arms of Los Angeles, the main official symbol of the city, does not in any way remind of the splendor and beauty of the stars living and filming here. On the contrary, it takes you back to those distant times, when no one even thought about cinema, and the first settlers from Europe just set foot on an unknown shore in search of a heavenly place.
Description of the coat of arms of Los Angeles
The main heraldic symbol of the city reminds residents and guests that the date of foundation of the settlement should be considered September 4, 1781. Any color photo conveys the brilliance of the coat of arms of the "city of angels", but it does not look colorful at all, because, firstly, there are not so many colors in it, and secondly, the colors of the Los Angeles coat of arms are in harmony with each other.
Two important equal parts can be distinguished in the composition: the heraldic, the so-called four-part shield; circle with inscriptions along the contour and symbolic images of plants. Each of the parts, in turn, is decomposed into smaller fragments that have a certain meaning. The role of the individual images that adorn the shield and circle is revealed upon closer acquaintance with the history of Los Angeles.
Through the pages of the chronicle of the city
The main place on the coat of arms is occupied by a silver shield, divided into four zones, each of which contains symbols of different countries, in one way or another connected with Los Angeles and its history.
In the lower right part, against a scarlet and silver background, there is a tower and a lion - the main symbols present on the heraldic sign of the Kingdom of León and Castile. Navigators from this European power became the pioneers of the American territories, where the city blocks of Los Angeles are now located.
At the bottom left there is an image of an eagle that is tormenting a reptile (snake). It was these representatives of the fauna that adorned the coat of arms of Mexico, in which Los Angeles managed to visit for a short time. The upper right corner is occupied by another representative of the fauna - a scarlet bear with a star, representing the flag of California in 1846. The fourth square symbolically depicts the flag of the United States, reminiscent of today's history of the city.
The date of foundation and the name of the city are written on the outer contour of the circle, images of three plants are visible - olive, grape and orange. The first is known in heraldry as the main symbol of peace, the remaining ones testify to the fertility of local territories, are symbols of wealth and prosperity.
