The Great Silk Road passed here, and it seems that the ancient cities now remember the caravans majestically sailing on the sands of the Karakum Desert. Today, getting to the heart of the great desert is much easier - the airports of Turkmenistan accept daily flights from Russia and other countries. Ashgabat and Moscow are connected by direct flights of Turkmen Airlines. Travel time is 3.5 hours.
International airports of Turkmenistan
Of the seven airports in Turkmenistan, only the capital in Ashgabat and the air harbor of the city of Turkmenbashi in the west of the country have international status. At the same time, the latter accepts, in addition to domestic, only flights from Istanbul.
Metropolitan direction
The airport in Ashgabat is located 10 km northwest of the capital of Turkmenistan. Its grand opening took place in 1994 and the air harbor was named after the country's first president, Saparmurat Niyazov. The modern terminal is capable of receiving and serving more than 1,500 passengers per hour, offering guests to use a convenient and varied infrastructure:
- Duty free shops have a range of traditional goods as well as authentic souvenirs.
- In the room of a mother and child, you can comfortably stay while waiting for a flight with a large family.
- Restaurants and fast food cafes showcase a colorful menu of local cuisine.
The airport also has currency exchange offices, a reference service, ticket offices of "Turkmen Airlines" and offices of air carriers that are part of the Star Alliance.
A new terminal of the capital's international airport of Turkmenistan is under construction, which is scheduled to be commissioned in 2016.
Airlines and destinations
Today, the capital of Turkmenistan can be reached on the wings of several carriers, the main one of which is the local "Turkmen Airlines". They have scheduled flights from Almaty, Ankara, Bangkok, Beijing, Delhi, Dubai, Frankfurt, Minsk, St. Petersburg, Moscow and Paris.
Of the foreign carriers, China Southern Airlines, Belavia, Flydubai, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa and S7 have become frequent guests on the airfield, on whose wings you can fly to Urumqi, Minsk, Dubai, Istanbul, Frankfurt and Moscow.
For a transfer to the city, the easiest way is to use the services of a taxi or public transport - the bus stop is located at the exit from the terminal.
On the Caspian shores
The air harbor of Turkmenbashi was commissioned in 2010. The city where the airport is located is located on the Caspian Sea and is a major international port and the center of the country's oil refining industry.
The main flights in the Turkmenbashi's schedule are domestic. The city is connected by regular flights with Ashgabat, Mary, Turkmenbad and Dashoguz. In addition, the aircraft of the "Turkmen Airlines" fly from here to Istanbul.
The international status is emphasized by the border control points and the modern infrastructure of Turkmenbashi.
