The north of Australia is the northern peninsulas of the country: Arnhemland, Cape York, Kimberley, as well as parts of the mainland that adjoin these areas from the south. The transition to southern lands is carried out by changing landscapes and climate. Northern Australia has a highly indented coastline. From this side, the mainland has access to the seas of the Pacific Ocean: Arafur, Timor and Torres Strait.

The gulfs of Van Diemen, Carpentaria and Joseph-Bonaparte are located on the continental shelf and cut into the coast. There are many islands and coral formations here. The relief of the northern part of the country is represented by lowlands and plateaus. There are also minor and not very high mountains. The extreme point of Australia in the north is Cape York. Near the northeastern coast, the Great Barrier Reef stretches, which is the largest coral reef on the planet. Its length exceeds 2000 km.

Northern Australia climate

The weather conditions in the country differ depending on the areas. Seasonality here is expressed in the opposite way to seasonality in the northern hemisphere. Northern Australia has a tropical climate with dry and wet seasons. The temperature changes slightly throughout the year. In winter, the average temperature is +22 degrees, and in summer +33 degrees. In the central regions, the climate is hotter. In the southern regions, cold winters occur, especially in mountainous areas.

Natural features

The state of flora and fauna is highly dependent on the relief and climate. The North of Australia experiences water shortages during the dry season. The vegetation cover is formed depending on the length of the rainy season and the amount of precipitation. The coasts are covered with palms and other plants that can withstand the tides of the sea. The shores of the Gulf of Carpentaria have mangroves. Rainforests are found in the eastern regions. Ficuses, palms, laurel trees, eucalyptus trees, ferns, pandanuses, lianas, etc. grow there. The fauna is represented by forests and savannas. In northern Australia, kangaroos, emus, wombats, koalas, crocodiles, lyrebirds and other animals are found. A feature of certain areas are structures created by termites. The territory in question is rarely inhabited. For this reason, its natural resources are poorly developed. In some areas, diamonds, oil, bauxite and uranium ore are mined. Agriculture in the north of the country is not developed due to unsuitable agro-climatic conditions.

Popular resorts in northern Australia

Cairns is considered one of the most beautiful resort places in the country. This is the northern corner of Australia, where the tourism industry is well developed. Here trips to aboriginal settlements, jeep safaris, beach vacations, etc. are possible. Lysard Island is one of the best and most expensive northern resorts of the Barrier Reef.
