Transport in Switzerland, especially ground transport, is well developed, and therefore domestic flights are not popular with tourists, especially since ticket prices are high.

Main types of transport

  • Public transport: this includes buses, and in some cities - trams (Zurich, Geneva), trolleybuses, funiculars. The most remote settlements can be reached by "post" buses (they run strictly according to the schedule). You cannot buy a ticket directly on the bus or tram - at each stop you will find machines that accept coins and special cards for payment (they are also sold at kiosks). It should be noted that there are decent fines for travel without a ticket.
  • Rail transport: trains to major Swiss cities leave almost every hour. If you buy round trip tickets, you can get a 10% discount. In addition, significant discounts are provided for those purchasing tickets in advance. It is worth noting that you can use the services of regional, high-speed and panoramic trains. If you are going to actively move around the country, you should buy a Swiss Pass - it will allow you to move around Switzerland by trains, buses, steamers for 4, 8, 15, 22 days, freely enter museums, take part in excursions at a discount, for example, to the mountain peaks.

Taxi

You can order a taxi by phone, find it in parking lots, and also stop on the street. Taxi fares are quite high, with prices varying from city to city.

Car rent

To visit the lakes, see Swiss castles and admire the local landscapes, it makes sense to rent a car. To rent a car, in addition to an international driver's license, you must have at least 3 years of driving experience (minimum age is 21-25 years) and a credit card (for renting some brands, you will need 2 cards).

In settlements, it is forbidden to drive at a speed higher than 50 km / h, on motorways - 120 km / h, on other roads - 80 km / h. Important: it is necessary to drive with the headlights on (low beam) in rainy weather and when driving through tunnels. And when going to Murren, Zermatt, Venget, you should know that there is no car communication with these cities (you can get here only by tram or train). It is worth considering that almost all parking lots are paid and you need to pay for them at the machines located next to the parking spaces. And in free parking lots, you can leave your car only for a limited amount of time.

Do not forget about the system of fines: you can only talk on the phone with free hands, while driving, you must definitely wear seat belts and try not to exceed speed.

To get to know the country, you need to travel around Switzerland, especially since the local travel options are very comfortable and safe.
