Jordan's main airport serves the country's capital, Amman. The airport is located in the Zizia region, about 30 kilometers to the city. It bears the name of Queen Alia, the third wife of King Hussein.
The airport in Amman was commissioned in 1983. In the spring of 2013, a new modern passenger terminal was put into operation. The airport cooperates with many airlines, one of the main among them is Royal Jordanian Airlines.
The airfield has 2 runways, both 3660 meters long. One with asphalt, the other with concrete. More than 6.5 million passengers are served here annually and about 70 thousand take-offs and landings are made.
History
As mentioned above, the airport in Amman was built in 1983. At that time, the country was already in need of an airport; after the construction, the number of passenger traffic increased rapidly. Therefore, 2 passenger terminals were rebuilt, which together could serve 3.5 million passengers a year.
However, the growth of passenger traffic continued rapidly, already in 2012 the number of passengers served almost doubled the maximum value and amounted to more than 6 million.
In this regard, the International Group, which has been in charge of the airport since 2007, began to invest heavily in its development. So in 2013, the old terminals were replaced by a new, more modern passenger terminal. Now the airport's capacity is 7 million passengers a year. In addition, a new expansion is planned to be completed by 2016, which will increase the capacity to 12 million passengers.
