The second most important airport in Cuba serves the city of Varadero. It bears the name of the national hero of Cuba, Juan Gualberto Gomez.
The airport has a relatively short history; it was launched in 1989. The first years of its existence were not marked by a large number of served passengers. For 2 years since the opening, the airport has served only 200 thousand passengers. Such a small passenger traffic was due to the fact that the airport did not cooperate with the nearest major cities in Mexico and the United States.
The impetus for development was given in 1991 after the signing of a cooperation agreement with the city of Mexico City. Since then, within a year and a half, a number of agreements have been signed with major cities in Europe, North and South America.
By 2000, the airport ceased to meet IATA standards, so it was decided to carry out a major reconstruction, which began in 2006. The biggest changes were the passenger terminal, which was doubled, and the runway, which had a new surface.
Today Varadero Airport is the second most important airport in Cuba, serving about 1.3 million passengers a year.
