Alcohol Croatia
For incoming travelers, the Croatian customs services have established norms for the import of alcohol in an amount of no more than a liter of spirits and no more than two - beer or wine. But common sense dictates that it is absolutely illogical to import alcohol into the country, and it is much more important to find out how much alcohol can be exported. You can buy alcohol in Croatia for gifts and souvenirs for friends without restrictions: the customs gives the go-ahead for any reasonable amount. Prices for the most popular brands of spirits in supermarkets start at 2 euros for a bottle of quite decent wine and from 4-5 euros for spirits (data from 2014).
National drink of Croatia
Among all the alcoholic abundance of the Balkan country, for which its own vineyards are a matter of special pride, a liqueur made from completely different berries stands out. For almost two hundred years, the national drink of Croatia has been pleasing its fans with a unique taste and originality. It is called maraschino and is made from a special variety of cherries that are crushed together with the seeds. This gives the maraschino a special subtle flavor similar to that of bitter almonds. Maraschino liqueur is dry and colorless, and the process of its production resembles the production of cognac.
The first cherry liqueur was made in 1821 in the Croatian port of Zadar. It took less than ten years for the author of the drink and the owner of the production to enchant the venerable public and obtain the monopoly rights to the production of the liqueur. Today, maraschino is an indispensable participant in many cocktails; it is used in the preparation of the best desserts and fruit dishes. We use little maraschino in its pure form, but true connoisseurs do not mind sipping a glass as an aperitif or for a company with a cup of coffee.
