Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport is the only airport in the world that is operated by two countries at once - France and Switzerland. The name of the airport is often shortened to Basel-Mulhouse, also called EuroAirport. The airport is located on the territory of France in the city of Saint-Louis and is located near the border with Switzerland, which is why this country also manages the airport.
It is ranked seventh in size in France and third in Switzerland. More than 5 million people are served here annually, as well as over 100 thousand tons of cargo.
The airport in Basel has 3 runways, two with artificial turf, 3900 and 1820 meters long. The third grass runway is only 630 meters long. The airport also has two passenger terminals.
History
The history of the airport in Basel dates back to the 20s of the last century. Then the Swiss airport was located in Birsfelden. However, by the 1930s it became clear that the airport could not provide quality work. Since the expansion of the old airport was not possible, Switzerland considered building a new airport.
Thus, negotiations began with France on the construction of an airport on their land, which will be managed by the two countries. These negotiations were interrupted by the Second World War.
After the war, negotiations were restored and in May 1946 the new airport was put into operation. In 1949, an agreement was signed that took into account the various nuances of airport management.
In subsequent years, Basel-Mulhouse Airport was reconstructed several times.
