Description of the attraction
The memorial complex "Demyanov Laz" is located in Ivano-Frankivsk, at the site of the mass destruction of prisoners by the NKVD. The complex was opened on October 11, 2009, with the help of activists. Excavations were carried out at the site of the tract, during which numerous human remains were found. During the work, it was possible to identify 524 victims of the communist regime, the names of another 400 executed were found out thanks to work with the archives of the SBU.
In the central part of the memorial complex, a small chapel was erected as a monument to the tortured victims of the Red Army, which hastily retreated from Stanislov (the old name of Ivano-Frankivsk) in June 1941. Candles are lit daily in the chapel, and services are held every Sunday. The authors of the project were architects Oleg Kozak and Nikolai Matyushenko.
In addition, the complex includes an extensive museum exposition, which reveals the whole truth about the repressions in the Carpathian region during socialism in 1939-1941. In the basement with an area of 92 square meters, visitors can not only learn about the progress of excavations and burials, and how the organizations "Rukh" and "Memorial" were created and conducted their activities, but also see real evidence of those tragic events. So, for the first time in Ukraine in this museum it became possible to get acquainted with the lists of the UNKVD employees who were directly related to the mass terror of the inhabitants of the Carpathian region.
