Description of the attraction

The Queensland Gallery of Contemporary Art is part of the Queensland Cultural Center on the south bank of the Brisbane River. Here you can see most of the work of contemporary artists from the collection of the Art Gallery of Queensland, as well as the 3-year exhibition of contemporary art from the Asia-Pacific region.

The gallery was opened on December 2, 2006. This is the second and highly anticipated building of the Queensland Art Gallery, which houses the largest collection of contemporary art in Australia - more than 13,000 works. Oddly enough, but the building of the gallery also houses the first cinema in Australia, built to show old films. The total area of the gallery is more than 25 thousand m2, and the largest exposition is located at 1100 m2.

The art gallery was founded in 1895 as the National Art Gallery of Queensland. Over the years of its history, the gallery with its collections was located in various buildings, until in 1982 it received a permanent "registration". Since the opening of the collection and expositions have grown, the flow of visitors has increased. In order to meet public needs, during the 1990s, the Gallery's management carried out extensive research work and consultations with leading experts from the arts. As a result, it was decided to build a second building - the Gallery of Contemporary Art, which opened in 2006 150 meters from the main building of the Art Gallery.

The main project of the Gallery of Modern Art is a series of exhibitions of Asia-Pacific art held every three years, which today has become a major national and international cultural event. The experience gained over the years of the exhibition has led to the founding of the Australian Center for Asia-Pacific Art. The gallery also exhibits work by Indigenous Australians and is working to foster relationships with Indigenous communities in Queensland. The gallery's educational programs for children since 1941 have received international acclaim. The gallery's exhibits are regularly transported to remote cities of the state.
