Description of the attraction

The Cathedral is the main church of the diocese of Mikkeli (South Savo). The red brick building with a tiled roof was designed by the eminent Finnish architect Josef Stenbeck and executed in the neo-Gothic style in 1896-97. The cathedral can accommodate up to 1200 parishioners within its walls.

The high bell tower was added at the end of the 60s. XX century to the west wall of the cathedral. Inside the cathedral, in its western part, there is an organ made in 1956. at a factory in Kangasala.

In the eastern part of the cathedral there is a large altar, painted in 1899. renowned artist Pekka Halonen. The altarpiece depicting the scene of the crucifixion of Christ was presented to the city as a gift.

In 1927. residents of the city set up a square with a picturesque pond next to it. To this day, they believe that any desire will come true by crossing the bridge over the pond.
