Description of the attraction
The only museum in Ukraine that represents the original school of Volyn icon painting is the Museum of the Volyn Icon. The museum is located in the city of Lutsk, on Yaroshchuk street, 5. The museum was opened in August 1993.
The creation of this collection is associated with the name of the outstanding Ukrainian art critic P. Zholtovsky. He headed the scientific expeditions of the Volyn Museum of Local Lore of the 80s of the twentieth century to collect and study historical and cultural monuments in the churches of the Volyn region.
The Lutsk Museum of Volyn Icon contains unique collections of sacred art monuments - icons, decorative carvings, sculptures, crucifixes and other religious objects. The museum's funds include over one and a half thousand exhibits that were created in the 11th - 20th centuries, including about 600 icons.
The school of Volyn icon painting was distinguished by its originality. Volyn icon painters possessed the ability to combine various styles, and also had a creative manner of translating religious ideas into picturesque images. Thanks to their unique energy, their icons have become famous not only in Ukraine, but also abroad.
The pearl of the Museum of the Volyn Icon, which attracts pilgrims from all over the world, is the miraculous Kholm Icon of the Mother of God. This is one of the oldest icons. The icon was probably painted in the 11th-12th centuries in Byzantium.
