Description of the attraction

The Museum of Fine Arts is located in picturesque Lunden Park, just 400 meters from Horsens town center. It was opened in 1906 and is dedicated to contemporary art. Particular attention is paid to the work of Mikael Kvium - the largest Danish artist of our day and a native of Horsens.

Initially, the museum was located in a modest building of the city technical school, but in 1915 it moved to a new modern building, specially built for this purpose. The money for the construction was donated by the famous aviator Theodor Loewenstein, who loved art. Now this elegant one-story building houses the Museum of Urban History. It is located in the same Lunden Park as the Museum of Fine Arts, only at a closer distance to the city center. Previously, the Horsens Museum combined both of these collections, but since 1984 there has been a division into the Museum of Urban History and the Museum of Fine Arts. It is worth noting that Lunden Park, on the territory of which both museums are located, was equipped back in 1843.

At the moment, the Museum of Fine Arts is housed in an elegant pavilion, built at the same time as the park, but heavily rebuilt at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. The building consists of two floors and is distinguished by spacious, bright rooms and an elegant balcony.

Among the museum collections, the works of Mikael Kvium, a supporter of a realistic direction in art, which sometimes even go beyond the grotesque, stand out. Also worth noting is the monumental painting "The Wall of People" located opposite the main entrance to the museum. It belongs to another contemporary artist - Bjorn Norgaard. However, the museum displays older paintings, including those made during the golden age of Danish art (early 19th century). The Horsens Museum of Fine Arts is still well represented by Danish modernists from the 1940s and 1960s. A separate collection is dedicated to foreign contemporary art.
