Description of the attraction
The Archangel-Mikhailovsky Monastery was built on the outskirts of Odessa by the Governor-General Count Mikhail Vorontsov in 35. 19th century in honor of its patron saint. The monastery has an illustrious 160-year history. The glory of its creation belongs to the famous figures of Odessa: Prince M. Vorontsov and his wife E. Vorontsova, A. S. Pushkin's friend Countess R. Edling, philanthropist and writer A. Strudz and others.
In 1839, the Holy Synod adopted a decree on the establishment of a female co-ordinate monastery at the church. A hospital and a refectory for the poor were attached to the monastery, the doors of the Diocesan Women's School for orphan girls were opened. After the revolution, the monastery was first closed as "counter-revolutionary", and then both the cathedral and the bell tower were blown up. Only with the arrival of the occupation power in 1942, the premises of the monastery were again transferred to the sisters of the monastery. However, his misfortunes did not end there: twenty years later the monastery was closed again, and its territory was given to the city tuberculosis hospital.
The revival of the Archangel-Mikhailovsky Monastery began in the last decade of the last century: the charter was registered, and two years later part of the remaining premises was returned, it should be noted that their condition was very dilapidated. Nevertheless, the monastery was reborn from the ruins: not only new buildings were erected, old traditions were revived. Thanks to the care of the Archpastor of Odessa, His Eminence Metropolitan Agafangel, the monastery was replenished with the miraculous icon of the Herbovets Mother of God. Workshops, a charitable refectory were opened on the territory of the monastery, a house of mercy began to work, and the year of the 210th anniversary of the city and the 150th anniversary of the Kasperovskaya Icon of the Mother of God became the year of the opening of the museum hall "Christian Odessa".
