The word "Miradoru" in Portugal is called the observation decks, which are located on the highest point of one of the seven hills of Lisbon. The viewing platforms offer stunning views of the city and its attractions. They are popular not only among the guests of Lisbon, but also among the locals.
The Miradoru de Santa Catarina viewpoint is one of the most popular viewpoints in Lisbon. The site is bordered by the Bairro Alto and Chiado districts. Those wishing to relax can sit in a small and beautiful cafe on the terrace. The terrace offers a magnificent view of the opposite bank of the Tagus River, the harbor and the suspension bridge named after 25 April. The roofs of the houses are visible, which from above resemble terracotta mosaics. It is especially beautiful in the evening to look at the sparkling bridge and the statue of Christ, which is also illuminated.
On the site, attention is drawn to the marble statue of Adamastor - a mythical monster from the sea, which is also one of the symbols of the city. Adamastor is a character from a poem by the Portuguese poet Luis Camões. In the poem, Adamastor appears before the members of the Vasco da Gama expedition and threatens to destroy the expedition, since they invaded the Indian Ocean, the ruler of which was the giant Adamastor. In a broader sense, Adamastor is the personification of the elements and obstacles in the guise of a monster, and these obstacles are overcome by the Portuguese expeditions during the era of the great geographical discoveries.
Due to the fact that this statue stands on the site, Miradoru de Santa Catarina is also called "at Adamastor". Nearby is the Pharmacy Museum.
