Description of the attraction
Tramonti is a resort town located on the Amalfi Riviera on the Via Chunzi road that leads to Majori. The city's name literally means "among the mountains." Tramonti was once an important city of the maritime Amalfi Republic and a major trading port in the Mediterranean. And today it is a recognized resort, famous for its historical and architectural monuments. The numerous old churches of the city stand out especially.
In the town of Pumice, there is a small one-nave church of Ascension - the Ascension of the Lord with an adjoining bell tower, and in the village of Sant Elia you can see the church of the same name with an elegant portal made of volcanic tuff and traces of frescoes. Also noteworthy are the Church of San Giovanni in Polvica with a memorial plaque to the King of Naples Ferdinand I, Pietro Apostolo in Filino, made in the Baroque style, Sant Erasmo in Pukar with well-preserved works of the art school of Luca Giordano and the Rupestre chapel, carved into the rock. Interesting for tourists can be a visit to the monastery of St. Joseph and St. Teresa, built in the 17th century and originally served as an orphanage, and the castle of Santa Maria La Nova, erected in 1457 by the prince of Salerno, Raymond Orsini. The rectangular base of the castle was fortified with ten small square towers and seven ramparts, of which only a part has survived. Today, a cemetery is located on the territory of Santa Maria La Nova.
Finally, it is worth visiting the Monastery of San Francesco, founded in 1474 by Matteo D'Angelo di Tramonti. Over the past centuries, this vast three-story building with a large cloister has undergone a number of changes. Today it houses the relics of Ambrosius Romano di Tramonti, bishop of Minori from the 16th century and a man of great culture, as well as the body of Martin de Maho, bishop of Bisacci from the 15th century. Inside the monastery is decorated with statues of Saints Gerardius and Elizabeth of Hungary and a marble triptych depicting Saints Stefano, Anthony and Valentine. Noteworthy are the ancient frescoes and the beautiful 18th-century wooden choir stalls.
