Description of the attraction
The Vienna House of Art was opened on April 9, 1991 in Vienna. The old building of the Tonet furniture factory, which once produced the famous Viennese chairs, was completely rebuilt by Hundertwasser himself in two years. The museum is located on an area of 4000 square meters. On the first two floors there is a permanent exhibition of Hundertwasser's works, the other floors are given over to temporary exhibitions. Hundertwasser's works include a significant collection of paintings as well as graphics, applied arts, architectural designs and sketches.
The entire building is in typical Hundertwasser style, with wavy lines and a noticeable lack of right angles. The interior uses bright colors and glass to give the space a sunshine and a sense of lightness. As in other projects, many living trees, shrubs and other vegetation have been planted in the museum building, which gives not only beauty and comfort, but also enriches with oxygen. This is a house that absolutely does not meet generally accepted standards and gives visitors a journey into the world of creative architecture.
The museum has held over 60 international exhibitions since its opening. Their implementation was made possible by a whole team of art historians, museum directors and curators around the world.
On the ground floor of the museum, a shop is open, where you can buy unique products created according to the original sketches of Hundertwasser. Here you can buy rare art books, porcelain, posters and various reproductions.
In 2009, the museum was visited by over 174,000 people.
Just a few steps from the museum is the famous residential building, also built according to the sketches of Hundertwasser. This landmark is one of the most famous in Vienna, and the proximity to the Vienna House of the Arts allows you to visit them together.
