Description of the attraction

One of the centers of the Makarska Riviera, the town of Baska Voda receives thousands of tourists every year. Its popular attraction is the Archaeological Museum, owned by the local municipality. The museum is small in size and has an extremely rich collection. It is located in an old building by the sea. Its copies date back to an extensive period from 2000 BC. NS. until the 7th century A. D. NS.

Most of the items presented in the museum and which are its pride were discovered by archaeologists during excavations on a hill located to the west of the center of Baska Voda. A long time ago there was a settlement there, founded in the early Bronze Age. Then the ancient Romans settled here, who also left behind many artifacts. The site of archaeological searches has now been turned into a kind of open-air museum. Scientists have recreated the dwelling of an ancient Roman, where glassware and jugs, in which food was previously stored, are displayed.

Several halls of the Archaeological Museum are not crowded. Along the perimeter of the rooms, special, well-lit niches are equipped, where especially valuable exhibits are displayed. Other archaeological finds are kept in glass cases. In the museum you can see old, carefully restored amphoras, round, pot-bellied vessels, spearheads, ancient coins cleaned of sand and dirt, burial urns, oil lamps, the remains of columns, gravestones decorated with carvings and inscriptions in Latin. Another hall of the museum is dedicated to the Byzantine era. There are in the Archaeological collection of Baska Vody and objects related to a later historical period.
