Description of the attraction

Gilibert Park in Grodno was founded by the French physician, botanist, biologist Jean Emmanuel Zhilibert on April 8, 1775. In the 18th century, it was one of the best botanical gardens in Europe.

J. E. Gilibert was an outstanding scientist, teacher and educator of his time. He came from Lyon to Grodno at the invitation of the Grodno public figure, economist and industrialist Anthony Tizengauz. With the support of Tizengauz, Zhilibert opened a Medical Academy, a pharmacy in Grodno and founded a botanical garden.

Gilibert considered himself a physician, but by studying the beneficial properties of plants, he made a huge contribution to the development of botany. According to his method, one of the most famous botanical gardens in Europe was laid out, several botanical species were named after him, he also described the medicinal properties of plants, their useful and dangerous properties for human health. The botanical garden consisted of over 2000 plant species.

Unfortunately, after Gilibert's departure from Grodno, the city authorities did not take good care of the botanical garden, and soon the garden fell into disrepair.

On the territory of this ancient botanical garden, the park named after Zhiliber was founded in our time. Of course, it is very different from the botanical garden founded by the famous French doctor, but even today it fascinates with its alleys, gazebos, the quiet murmur of the river, openwork bridges and bronze statues.

On the territory of the park, there are statues of a Grodnov woman - a girl pensively sitting in a clearing, the founder of the park Zhiliber and an outstanding architect of Grodno - Giuseppe Sacco.
