Description of the attraction
The building currently occupied by the National Academic Drama Theater. I. Franko, built on the site of a pond that was drained at the end of the 20th century. This whole area was once considered not very suitable for construction. A little higher than this building is the famous House with Chimeras by architect V. Gorodetsky. However, in 1898 a two-story house appeared on this place, and in October the Solovtsov Theater began its activity, which served as the beginning of the Russian Drama Theater named after A. L. Ukrainka, where it was located until 1926. Not long after its foundation, the theater received the name of I. Franko. During the war, the theater building was destroyed, it was rebuilt in 1946 and returning to Kiev the theater continued its activities.
The reconstruction of the theater building took place in 59-60. of the last century, after the completion of the building, the third floor appeared. In addition, a public garden was opened in front of the theater, where guests and citizens of Kiev can relax before the performance. In the center of the square there is a fountain with a bowl, installed here in 1900.
It received the status of the National Theater in 1994. Since that time, it has been called the National Academic Drama Theater. I. Franko. Since the end of the twentieth century, the theater has been constantly on tour. Theatergoers from Germany, Italy, Poland, Austria, Greece were able to get acquainted with the Ukrainian academic theater, whose performances were highly appreciated. The theater stands guard over the traditions of Ukrainian national drama, striving to combine them with the modern achievements of European drama.
