Description of the attraction
The Tree of Life is a popular tourist attraction located two kilometers from Jebel Dukhan. The Bahraini Tree of Life (Shayarat-Al-Hayat) is approximately 400 years old. The height of the plant is prosopis cineraria - about 9.75 m. The tree stands on the top of a 7.6 m sand mound, which formed around an ancient 500-year-old fortress.
Trees and shrubs of the genus prosopis are very well adapted to arid environments and have deep root systems. Scientists admit that the roots of the tree can reach 50 meters in depth, and there is a source of moisture there.
The plant is a local landmark as it is the only large tree found in the area. The "Tree of Life" is visited by about 50,000 tourists every year. As a result of vandalism by some tourists, the plant was damaged by graffiti drawings.
It is also believed that there were held religious rites, cults widespread in the pre-Islamic period of the country's history. In October 2010, archaeologists discovered pottery and other artifacts in the vicinity of the tree, some of which may have been
date back to the Dilmun civilization.
