Description of the attraction

The Church of the Resurrection of the Word near Arbat Square, unlike other Moscow churches, was not closed during the years of Soviet power and, perhaps, therefore, managed to preserve its numerous relics - the relics of saints and great martyrs, which were donated to the temple by the Patriarchs of Jerusalem. The church had the status of a Jerusalem courtyard from 1818 to the 1920s, then the status was returned to it in 1989.

The current building of the Church of the Resurrection of the Word in Filippovsky Lane was built in 1688. Funds for the construction were donated by a steward named Kosmin, and the very fact of the foundation of the first Resurrection Church is associated with the name of Metropolitan Philip of Moscow and his courtyard, which was located on this place a century earlier.

The 18th century, apparently, did not leave a significant trace in the history of the church. But at the beginning of the 19th century, after the plundering of it by French soldiers, they even wanted to demolish the church. She was saved by a petition that came to Alexander the First from the Patriarch of Jerusalem Polycarp. The appeal contained a request to provide a courtyard in Moscow, where monks could stay and collect donations for the restoration of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, which burned down almost completely in 1808. The emperor granted the request, after which the restoration of the church building began, which was completed by 1822. In 1818, the church was rededicated in honor of the Resurrection of the Word, and then for four years the repair and restoration of the building continued. After them, the church building began to resemble the Jerusalem Temple of the Resurrection.

In addition to the main throne of the Holy Resurrection, the temple has two chapels in honor of the Jerusalem Icon of the Mother of God and the Apostle Philip. Among the revered icons is the Akhtyrka Mother of God.
