The City Municipal Exhibition Hall of the Department of Culture was founded in 1997 in the city of Petrozavodsk. In 2002, the exhibition hall was transformed into a Municipal Cultural Institution called the City Exhibition Hall, which is one of the largest and most famous exhibition grounds in the heart of the city.

About 12-14 exhibitions are presented every year. The exhibition hall presents graphics, sculpture, painting, media art, photography, and many other types of visual arts. Among the considerable number of exhibitions that were organized by the City Exhibition Hall, there are two projects intended for long-term viewing and leading through historical development. Such exhibitions include: "Aquabiennale", as well as the "Impressions" triennial. The project "Aquabiennale" annually for two years has been collecting in the city of Petrozavodsk numerous works of watercolors from many countries. The Impressions project is an exposition dedicated to contemporary art, as well as to the numerous and varied types of imprinting of various kinds of images on various surfaces: film, paper, clay and others. At the very center of attention of the international project are: photography, production graphics, video art, numerous varieties of mixed techniques and computer generation.

The City Exhibition Hall is considered one of the modern multicultural centers of Petrozavodsk.
