Description of the attraction

In the most elevated part of the city center, on a hill, there was an Orthodox cathedral, visible from anywhere in Tuapse. Hence the name of the hill at that time - Church. The original name of this hill is the Fortress; the Velyaminovsky fort was built here. And in Soviet times, the hill was called Pionerskaya.

During the Great Patriotic War, the city of Tuapse was subjected to violent air raids and bombing from the air. Anti-aircraft batteries were located on the territory of the destroyed cathedral, which protected the city from air raids. Fascist aviation made numerous attempts to destroy anti-aircraft batteries, so the hill was dug with bomb craters.

In 1965, on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the victory of the Soviet Army in the Great Patriotic War, it was decided to rename the Pioneer Hill into the Hill of Heroes and erect a monument to the Unknown Soldier here. By May 9, 1965, the remains of unknown soldiers were buried here, the Eternal Flame was lit, and a guard of honor was set up. The authors of the project are A. P. Kramnik and D. K. Lisetskiy. Burials were carried out later, at the same time the territory of the memorial was improved. Today, a wide staircase leads to the Gorka Heroes, from its steps a panoramic view of the commercial port of Tuapse opens. At the approach to the stairs, marble memorial plaques are installed in a semicircle with the mention of the names and deeds of the soldiers who died during the liberation of Tuapse, military units and subdivisions of all types of troops that fought in the Tuapse direction during the Great Patriotic War are listed.

The memorial complex Gorka Heroes is a place of worship for the soldiers who died in the battles for Tuapse. Every year on May 9, many local residents come here to honor the memory of the fallen soldiers.
