Description of the attraction

Basilica of St. Nicholas is the main Catholic church in Amsterdam. It is located in the historic center of the city, close to the Royal Palace. The official name of the basilica is the Church of St. Nicholas "behind the wall", because it is located inside the old city walls of Amsterdam. The church received the status of a basilica in the 125th year of its existence, in 2012.

The church was built in 1884-1887. The architect of the church is Adrian Blays. The Basilica is a combination of several architectural styles, among which the Neo-Baroque and Neo-Renaissance are most clearly traced.

The facade of the basilica is crowned with two towers, between which there is a rose - a large round window with a figured binding, a characteristic feature of Gothic temples. In the center is a bas-relief depicting Jesus Christ and the four evangelists. The niche contains a sculpture of St. Nicholas, in whose honor the basilica is consecrated, and who is also considered the patron saint of Amsterdam.

During the Reformation, i.e. from the 16th century, the Catholic faith in the Netherlands was practically banned, Catholic churches were plundered and declared Protestant. The permission to build a new Catholic church was, of course, a great event.

Basilica of St. Nicholas is considered one of the most beautiful churches in Amsterdam. Recently renovated, with amazing acoustics, it is a great venue for various music concerts. The church houses a 19th century organ and hosts organ music concerts and church choir performances.
