Description of the attraction

In the area of the Tashkent railway station, the Orthodox Cathedral of the Assumption of the Mother of God rises. In the 19th century, there was a cemetery on which there was already a church consecrated in honor of St. Panteleimon. Due to the increase in the number of believers, it was necessary to expand this temple. In 1877, it was simply demolished, and the current cathedral was built on the vacated site. Funds for the construction of a new church were collected from the parishioners. The rich and respected people of the city donated huge sums for the construction. The construction of the bell tower in the immediate vicinity of the church was fully paid for by the merchant Dmitry Zakho. The cathedral, initially called the temple of St. Panteleimon, was completed in just a year.

In 1933, divine services stopped here: the church building was transferred to a warehouse, which was controlled by the military. In 1945, the temple was returned to the Orthodox Church again. It was consecrated again: now it has become the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God. At the end of the 50s, the church building was reconstructed, and at the same time its area was increased.

The Assumption Cathedral acquired its present appearance in the 1990s, when the high church tower was redesigned and the courtyard adjacent to the cathedral was put in order. Also during this period, the interior was updated. In 1996, thousands of parishioners gathered in the Tashkent cathedral to listen to the sermon of the Moscow Patriarch, who arrived in the capital of Uzbekistan on an official visit.

In 2014, the territory of the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Mother of God increased due to the construction of another temple, consecrated in honor of St. Luke. This church is intended for funeral services for those who have passed away.
