  • In Athens only in spring
  • Summer rest
  • Autumn Northern Greece

Greece is a place where legends come to life. As a guide to this country, you can easily take the book "Myths of Ancient Greece". Locals are firmly convinced that it is impossible to see absolutely all the sights of Greece even in a year. Therefore, tourists who have visited this state at least once come back here again and again, discovering new cities and islands.

People come to Greece alone or in a large company. It is convenient to walk along the narrow streets by the hand with a loved one, and it is interesting to spend time on the beach with the whole family - with children and older relatives.

Greece is beautiful in spring and autumn, that is, in the off-season. There are few tourists at this time, prices in hotels are falling, and good weather continues to please. In the summer, most tourists go to the sea, to the most famous Greek islands with postcard views, beaches, shaded palms and orange trees, light breezes from the water, cozy taverns serving excellent seafood.

Where is it better to go to Greece in the first place - to the mainland or to the islands? Consider all the options and choose the one that you like best!

In Athens only in spring

Athens
Athens

Athens

In summer, there is nothing to do in Athens: the heat, the melting pavements, the forests burning around the city. Spring Athens is another matter, when orange trees and almonds bloom. The air warms up to 20 degrees in March, which allows you to slowly explore all the local attractions, sit on the open terraces of numerous cafes, and go shopping.

What to see in Athens:

  • Acropolis. Athens is often referred to as the city of one attraction. From anywhere in the city, you can see the mountain crowned by the Parthenon. A narrow path leads to its foot, along which cafes are built, where delicious coffee is brewed. The Acropolis itself is a pile of stones that are thousands of years old. You can explore it on your own, trusting your intuition, or accompanied by a guide who will tell you a lot of interesting things;
  • Plaka is the local Montmartre or Arbat. Absolutely every tourist who comes to Athens comes here. It is customary here to walk, take pictures, buy souvenirs and fried pistachios wrapped in a newspaper. Grab a bite to eat in an authentic tavern where only locals eat. The food here is simple, hearty and very tasty;
  • Port of Piraeus with two museums - the Maritime and the Archaeological. From here ferries leave for the Greek islands.

Summer rest

Lindos

In the summer you need to go to the islands. The tourist season starts in mid-April and lasts until October. The islands that are located near Athens, and these are Aegina, Hydros, Poros, are suitable for leisurely walks. You can go there for one day from the capital of Greece. Much more interesting are more distant patches of land, where ferries also go. For example, Kefalonia, mentioned in the Hollywood movie Captain Corelli's Mandolin. She is somewhat reminiscent of Capri. Pine groves, crystal clear air, wild rocky beaches (they swim here directly from catamarans), postcard towns with shops of famous brands. Or Mykonos - Greek Ibiza with carbon monoxide parties until the morning, noisy bars and nudist beaches.

Rhodes is no less interesting - according to the myth, the habitat of the god Helios. Two seas meet off the coast of this island - the Aegean and the Mediterranean. At the junction of the seas, there are almost constantly high waves, which surfers highly appreciate. There is also something for sightseeing lovers in Rhodes. You should definitely see the place where the Colossus of Rhodes used to stand, climb on a donkey to the fortress in the snow-white town of Lindos, walk in the Seven Springs park along an underground corridor filled knee-deep with water, which guarantees cleansing from all sins.

Autumn Northern Greece

Halkidiki
Halkidiki

Halkidiki

It is better to plan your autumn vacation in Greece like this: devote a few days to a beach vacation on the Halkidiki peninsula and leave five days to explore the capital of Northern Greece - Thessaloniki. In September, the sea is still warm, which is why the velvet season begins in Greece. Halkidiki is a hotel for every taste, stretching along the coastline and sheltered from the wind by pine groves. The Greeks themselves call this area the lungs of the country.

Thessaloniki is a large city, inferior in size only to Athens. There is a European center with expensive shops and luxurious restaurants and whole neighborhoods of authentic Greek and Turkish houses built along steep streets that climb the hill where the remains of a local fortress and an Orthodox monastery are located. The most popular place for walking is the Nikis embankment. It starts near the port and goes up to the White Tower. Restaurants and cafes are built along it, where you can have a snack or just drink coffee, in order to go with renewed vigor to explore local historical monuments - the temples of Demetrius of Thessaloniki, St. Sophia, St. George, Agora, Rotunda, etc.

From Thessaloniki, you can go on an excursion to Meteora, where high cliffs are crowned with previously inaccessible, and now quite hospitable monasteries, and Vergina, where a mound was found with the burial of King Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great. Now it houses a luxurious Archaeological Museum.
