Showers are not a hindrance to rest
The low season in Thailand is a conditional concept, although this period has a clearly defined framework. Any tour operator will tell you that Thailand's rainy season starts in May and ends in October. But only a good specialist will emphasize that a trip to this country during the low season can be a great way to save money and have a good time. The fact is that the rains in Thailand rarely last more than two hours a day. Most often they go at night or in the morning. That is, by the middle of the day, even puddles, which dry out under the rays of the warm sun, no longer remind of them. After lunch, you can swim in the sea, which warms up perfectly.
One of the main advantages of relaxing in Thai resorts during the low season is considered to be significantly reduced prices for accommodation and entertainment. Even the groceries in private shops from May to October cost much less than in the dry season. And there are not many tourists in Thailand at this time, that is, you can go on excursions that interest you, while avoiding the crowds.
Disadvantages of resting during the rainy season
There are also downsides to traveling to Thailand during the low season. They are insignificant, but they can still matter when choosing a place to stay. During the rainy season in Thailand:
- it is undesirable to swim immediately after the last downpour: the waters near the coast will be teeming with jellyfish. You need to wait a while for the jellyfish to go deep;
- roads washed out by heavy rains will make some excursions impossible;
- because of the rough sea, boat trips between the islands are limited by local travel agencies;
- sometimes floods occur in popular resorts, especially in Pattaya. The water level on the central streets can reach 40 cm. This is because the city drains are clogged with all sorts of garbage;
- high waves and treacherous undercurrents appear off the shores of some islands.
Low season in Pattaya and Phuket
Each resort in Thailand has its own climatic characteristics, so the rainy weeks here can be predicted with a high degree of probability. In Pattaya, which is considered the most suitable for a trip in the low season, it rains heavily around half of May, several weeks in July and from August to September. Moreover, in the southern seaside part of Pattaya, tourists, waking up in the morning after a heavy rain, may not even guess that it has recently passed: the sun destroys all traces of the downpour in the blink of an eye.
The rainiest month in Phuket is September. It often rains in May and October as well. Many beaches are closed from the sky after the flood due to strong waves. For ordinary vacationers, red flags are posted as a warning about the prohibition of entry into the sea, which surfers do not pay any attention to. For them, the low season in Phuket is a great opportunity to go boarding.
Exceptional Koh Samui
Koh Samui is ideal for late spring and summer holidays because the rainy season in this area is shifted to autumn. Showers here begin in October and continue until early January. The wettest period is the first week of December.
If in other resorts of Thailand it rains mainly at night and only for a few hours, then Samui is an exception - for tourists it is not very pleasant. On this island, the heavens are played out for the whole country. The downpour, crashing down to the ground, can last for a couple of days. But then there will be a big break when the sun will reign in the sky. It is because of such unusual climatic conditions that it is not recommended to come to Koh Samui in the fall for a week and a half. Chances are that there will be few sunny days for swimming here, and you will have to spend most of your vacation at the hotel.
