Description of the Kherson coat of arms
The composition is based on a French shield, the most common in heraldic practice (especially in relation to cities). An additional element of the coat of arms is a decorative cartouche that surrounds the shield. Thanks to this, the city's coat of arms looks solemn, if not pompous. In addition, the composition is complemented by a gold-colored crown with three massive towers.
The shield contains the following elements that play an important role in the history and modern life of Kherson:
- yellow-golden gates, symbolizing the famous Kherson fortress;
- two criss-crossing anchors corresponding to the military and merchant fleets;
- oak and laurel branches of gold, present in the frame;
- rosette in the form of a monogram with the written year of foundation of Kherson "1778".
The elements can tell a lot to a specialist in the field of heraldry, and an ordinary person can draw correct conclusions about the important directions of the life of the city in the past and at the present stage.
From the history of the heraldic symbol
Kherson received the first coat of arms in 1803, when the city became the capital of the new province. On this coat of arms there was a symbol of the empire - a two-headed eagle, with a laurel branch and tongues of flame. On the chest of a bird of prey was a shield with a golden Orthodox cross and rays.
In Soviet times, Kherson also had its own symbol of the city, which was attended by fragments of anchors and gears, a sailboat and Ukrainian ornament.
