The United States of America is proud of its metropolitan cities, although they are only a few centuries old. The history of Boston, one of the oldest settlements of the American continent, began in 1630, and the day of its foundation is even known - September 17. The first inhabitants were the Puritan colonists who left the Massachusetts colony.
Foundation of the settlement
The first residents were very active in building and developing social infrastructure. A few years later, they proudly demonstrated the first English-language school in America, followed by the first college on the territory of the settlement, now known to the world Harvard.
In fact, the history of Boston took off vertically, in a few centuries it managed from a small colony to become one of the largest cities in British America (giving way only to New York).
War and Peace
The year 1773 will remain in American history as the day of the "Boston Tea Party" - this is a kind of response from the inhabitants of the city to the British, who tried to increase taxes. Massachusetts colonists boarded ships that brought tea to America and threw it overboard. This was followed by military actions and repressions against the inhabitants, but the city survived, after the war, it returned the glory of the seaport, one of the largest in the world.
The history of Boston can be briefly divided into periods - military and peaceful. In 1812, the outbreak of the war suspended the pace of trade, limited the activity of buying and selling. Therefore, merchants were forced to look for new directions for capital investment. Industrial production turned out to be very promising, Boston took a leading position in various branches of light industry, primarily garment and leather.
Boston in the twentieth century
Unfortunately, in the twentieth century, Boston began to decline, this was due to several reasons: the aging of industrial enterprises and the outflow of labor to other, more promising areas of the United States.
The authorities took measures to return the former greatness: since the 1970s, the so-called economic boom begins in the city, enterprises are redesigned, and new ones are opened. Medical institutions are becoming centers for the introduction of new technologies and scientific innovations, and the social sphere is developing. Today Boston is a city that was able to return the glory of a technological, scientific, and innovative center.
