The rivers of Bulgaria form a dense network. Basically, the country's rivers are short and mountainous. That is why they become significantly shallow in the summer.
Danube river
Danube belongs to the first place in length in the territory of the European Union. The total length of the river channel is 2,960 kilometers. The source of the river is in Germany (Black Forest mountains). And then the Danube passes through the territory of ten states. The river flows into the waters of the Black Sea.
Iskar river
The river runs through the western part of Bulgaria and is the right tributary of the Danube. The source is located on the slopes of the Rila mountains (western slopes). The total length of the river is 340 kilometers. The source of the river is the confluence of the two rivers Cherni-Iskar and Beli-Iskar.
Tundzha river
The river flows through the eastern part of Bulgaria and partly through the territory of Turkey. The source of the river is on the southern slopes of the Balkans (Kalofer city). In its upper course, the river passes through the territory of the Kazanlak Valley. Then it turns south, entering the valley of the Maritsa River. And ultimately flows into it near the city of Edirne, becoming a left tributary.
The total length of the river channel is 283 kilometers.
Yantra river
A river located in the northern part of the country, which is the right tributary of the Danube. The total length of the river channel is 285 kilometers. The Yantra has an unusually large number of tributaries - thirty. And all of them exceed 10 km in length.
The largest are:
- Rositsa. Channel length - 164 km, basin area 2265 km;
- Stara River (Lefedzha). The channel length is 92 km, the basin area is 2424 km;
- Dzhulunitsa. The channel length is 85 km, the basin area is 892 km.
On the banks of the river are located such cities as Gabrovo, Gorna-Oryahovitsa; Byala, Poslki-Trymbesh and Veliko Tarnovo.
Maritsa river
The Maritsa is one of the largest rivers in the Balkan Peninsula. The length of the channel is 490 kilometers. The source of the river is located near the town of Dolna Banya (eastern part of the Rila Mountains). After that, Maritsa descends to the territory of the Plovdiv Valley, smoothly moving towards Edirne (Greek-Turkish territory). The river flows into the Aegean Sea, before that it forms a swampy delta.
The main tributaries of the Maritsa: Sazliyka; Gyops; Tunja; Ergene; Krichima; Chepelar; Vycha; Arda.
Since the river is fed mainly by rains, during the summer period of the year Maritsa becomes very shallow. Its lower reaches quite often flood, which is associated with past snowfalls or rains in the upper reaches.
