The history of the Greek capital began long before the birth of Christ, and today this city has turned into a modern metropolis, where the past and the future, the ancient and the newfangled, are surprisingly combined. The main attractions, known to us from the textbooks of ancient history, are located in the city center, but the suburbs of Athens can boast of constant interest of tourists.

Just ten kilometers north of the center of the capital, tourists find themselves in the suburbs of Athens, where one of the most important spiritual centers of Orthodoxy is located. The monastery of St. Paraskeva in Acharnes was founded by Archimandrite Jerome and today is a place of pilgrimage for thousands of believers. The main shrine of the monastery is the image of the Mother of God, revered as miraculous.
The secular program of stay in Acharnes certainly includes a visit to the Museum of Folk Art and tasting local cuisine in authentic Greek taverns.
In the homeland of Demeter
The Greek goddess of fertility and agriculture, Demeter, was especially revered in ancient times. The suburb of Athens, Elephsis, is still considered the cult center of this goddess. It was here in ancient times that the Eleusinian Mysteries were held - rituals dedicated to Demeter.
Of the sights preserved in the city, several ancient buildings are of particular historical importance:
- Remains of sanctuaries built in the 6th century BC
- Fragments of a necropolis with tholos, dating from the 15th century BC. and the sanctuary of the time of Pericles, an orator and general who lived in Athens in the 5th century BC.
- Two triumphal arches of ancient Roman construction and a temple of Artemis from the same period.
In the Eleusinian Archaeological Museum, you can see interesting artifacts found during excavations in this suburb of Athens. The exhibition presents rarities related to the pre-Christian period, which spanned 1950-1580 BC. NS.
