In May 1990, North and South Yemen were merged. On the day when the agreement was officially signed, securing this event legally, the state flag of the Republic of Yemen appeared.

Description and proportions of the flag of Yemen

The rectangular shape of the flag of Yemen is traditional for the vast majority of independent world powers. The ratio of its length and width can be expressed as a 3: 2 ratio. The flag of Yemen is a classic tricolor, the field of which is divided horizontally into three equal parts in width. The upper stripe of the Yemen flag is painted bright red and symbolizes the blood of heroes shed in the battles for the sovereignty and unification of the country. The central field of the flag of Yemen is white. It recalls the importance of world peace and the desire of the people of Yemen for prosperity and mutually beneficial partnerships with neighbors. The lower stripe of the Yemen flag is black. This color symbolizes the Prophet Muhammad and the importance of his teachings for the people of the state.

History of the flag of Yemen

The first Yemeni flag was adopted in 1927. It was a red banner with an image of a curved saber and five stars made in white. Then the country was called the Yemen Mutawakkily Kingdom, which existed until 1962. Then the flag of the state was canceled, and not replaced by the banner of the Federation of South Arabia. It was a rectangle with three equal stripes of black, bright green and blue, arranged sequentially from top to bottom. Between the main stripes were two narrower yellow fields. The center of the flag of Yemen was occupied by a crescent moon, facing from the pole to the free edge, and a five-pointed star, inscribed in white.

Until 1990, North Yemen bore the name of the Yemen Arab Republic and used the tricolor of red-white-black colors with a five-pointed green star in the middle as a flag.

The flag of Yemen is also used today in the emblem of the state. The coat of arms depicts a golden eagle with open wings, holding a ribbon with the name of the country in its paws. On either side of the bird are the flags of Yemen, and on its chest there is a shield with a stylized image of the fruit of the coffee tree. It is Yemen that is considered the birthplace of this fragrant and beloved drink by millions. The golden line on the border of the coffee tree and the sea waves on the coat of arms symbolizes the Marib Dam in the ancient state of Saba in the territory of modern Yemen.
