The first flag of Luxembourg was adopted in 1815 by Willem, King of the Netherlands, who ascended the throne and became the Grand Duke of Luxembourg. The flag of Luxembourg differed from the official symbol of Holland only in the lower stripe, which had a slightly lighter shade of blue.
In 1972, the Luxembourg flag was officially approved by the country's parliament, and 20 years later, the lower field of the flag was made even lighter to make the similarity with the national flag of the Netherlands even less noticeable.
Luxembourg civil courts use the Red Lion flag, which depicts a red lion standing on its hind legs against a background of alternating five white and five blue horizontal stripes. His head is crowned with a golden crown, his tongue and claws are also painted in gold. The red lion is also depicted on the coat of arms of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, where his figure is adorned with a heraldic shield, crowned with the Grand Ducal crown.
The chairman of one of the parliamentary factions made a proposal to replace the national flag of Luxembourg with the flag "Red Lion". His proposal met with the approval of the absolute majority of the country's residents. 90 percent of the participants in a poll conducted by one of the radio stations voted for the introduction of the "Red Lion" flag as the state flag.
