Description of the attraction

The Church of St. George in Kavarna is the oldest building in the city, dating back to the Bulgarian Renaissance. According to an inscription carved in stone above the south gate, the temple was built in 1836.

As a result of the Kavarna uprising in 1877, when the local people were fighting for liberation, a fire broke out in the city. The church of St. George was also damaged because of the fire. At the end of the 19th century, the building was restored, a tower was added to it at the north-western corner, and a wide porch was built along the western and southern walls. Currently, the temple is a small rectangular building with a narthex. An open bell tower with a dome is a traditional element in Bulgarian church architecture.

By the decision of the local authorities, Saint George was declared the patron saint of Kavarna. An Orthodox church in the city was also named in honor of this saint.

There is an altar in the main room of the temple with a semi-cylindrical ceiling. The walls are lined with rows of icons depicting scenes from the Holy Scriptures.

The unusual architecture and valuable icons kept in the church make it a unique monument of the history and culture of Bulgaria.
