Description of the attraction

The Assumption Cathedral is the Orthodox Cathedral of the city of Varna. Located in the very center of the city, on St. Cyril and Methodius. The construction of the temple was started in 1880 at the initiative of the Tsar of Bulgaria Alexander I of Battenberg. In memory of the Empress of the Russian Empire Maria Alexandrovna, wife of Alexander II, who was the ruler of aunts, the church was consecrated in the name of the Assumption of the Holy Mother of God.

The foundation of the temple was created according to the project of the architect from Odessa Maas, and the Varna architect P. Kupka worked on the creation of the building itself. Funding for the construction was mainly carried out through private donations, although a lottery was also organized to collect money, during which the organizers sold about one hundred and fifty thousand tickets, worth two levs each. The construction was completed in October 1885. By 1949, painting appeared on the walls of the temple, and in the 60s, stained-glass windows were inserted into the large windows overlooking the square. At the very end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century, the cathedral restored the frescoes, installed a ventilation system, renewed the covering of the domes of the temple and the roof, and also installed a unique system of external lighting of the building, designed to effectively emphasize the beauty of its architecture in the evening.

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin is considered by many to be one of the symbols of Varna, and its high bell tower offers an excellent view of the entire city.
