Description of the attraction
The palace complex of the Wittelsbachs (Residence) grew gradually in the XIV-XIX centuries. This monumental ensemble combines austere Gothic spirituality, baroque fantasy, the richness of the rococo style and the grace of neoclassical lines.
The palace has 112 rooms. Deserve special attention: the Antiquarium hall, made in the Renaissance style with a vaulted leaf; the gallery of the Ancestors, decorated with 121 portraits of members of the Wittelsbach dynasty; court chapel and personal chapel of Maximilian I; halls of the Nibelungen with wall paintings of scenes from the German epic of the same name.
The Treasury of the Residence contains a magnificent collection of jewelry, crystal, ivory, enamel that belonged to members of the Wittelsbach family, as well as symbols of royalty - the crown of the Bavarian kings and the sword of the Duke of Bavaria.
The Cuvillier Theater, built in the 18th century in the Rococo style, is considered a masterpiece of theatrical architecture. On January 29, 1781, the premiere of Mozart's opera "Idomeneo" took place here.
