Description of the attraction
If, walking around Barcelona, going down along La Rambla, you can go to the embankment, where a monument to the greatest navigator Christopher Columbus is erected on the Portal de la Pau square, who made a grandiose sea voyage to the shores of another, previously unexplored continent - America and returned safely after its opening to Spain.
The monument was erected at the time of the first World Exhibition in Barcelona in 1888. The tall column is crowned with a 7, 2-meter-high statue of the great navigator, created by the sculptor Rafael Atché. The master depicted the discoverer, pointing with his right hand in the direction of the New World, and holding a scroll in his left hand.
Inside the column on which the statue of Columbus rises, there is an elevator that takes you to the top of the monument. There is an observation deck here, which offers a stunning view of the port and the Old Town. The column itself stands on an octagonal pedestal on which statues of people associated with Columbus are installed, as well as excellent bas-reliefs depicting scenes from the life of Columbus, as well as his travels to the shores of America.
An interesting fact is that Columbus monuments are installed in almost every major port city in Spain, but the Barcelona people consider their monument special, because it was to Barcelona that the navigator returned from his fateful journey and here he presented his report on the new lands to King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile.
At the foot of the monument there is a pier with small boats, on which you can take a sightseeing tour along the coast and admire the view of the city.
