Description of the attraction

One of the landmarks of the city of Zhitomir is the Filippov mansion, which is located on the southern outskirts of the city, on B. Berdichevskaya street, 61/18.

The two-storey house, made in the Baroque style, belonged to the Zhitomir lawyer and notary Ivan Nikolaevich Filippov. Built in 1886, the house was originally wooden. But in 1903 I. Filippov reconstructed it, turning it into a luxurious mansion.

In Soviet times, due to the change of government, the house changed its owners several times. This mansion housed various institutions. Initially, a Soviet party school was opened in the house, in which A. Dovzhenko was a teacher. During the civil war in 1920, the headquarters of the first cavalry army of Budyonny was located here for a short time. Later, an educational institution was opened in the house - school number 22. But most of all people visited it when the registry office was located in the notary's building in the mid-70s. In Soviet times, it was planned to finish building the house from the rear, however, with the collapse of the USSR, construction stopped.

Today, the building simultaneously houses three state organizations: the registry office, the department of culture and the department of justice. The elegant and neat manor house seems to have retained the charm of its previous owner. To bring the mansion into proper form, in the fall of 2010, renovation work began.

Filippov's mansion is an architectural monument of local importance, which can only be compared with the consistory building, which now houses the local history museum. Filippov's mansion and consistory were built in the same architectural style.
