Description of the attraction
The most famous market in Madrid and one of the most popular cultural sites is the San Miguel Market. The market is located in Piazza San Miguel, near the famous Plaza Mayor. Once upon a time there was a temple on this place, and after a fire in 1790 a square was formed here. For a long time, trade here was conducted in the open air. This continued until 1916, when, according to the project of the architect Alfonso Dube-y-Diez, a market building was erected here, replete with openwork forged metal structures.
San Miguel is not quite a market in its traditional sense. Of course, here you can buy various products, mainly fruits, vegetables, fish and seafood, as well as all kinds of drinks are presented in a large assortment. But besides this, the San Miguel market is replete with cafes, restaurants and eateries, where they will prepare the freshest dish from the products you just purchased right in front of you. The most popular among visitors are Spanish tapas, fish caviar, oysters and other shellfish, masterfully prepared by first-class Spanish chefs. Here you can also taste cod, pasta, meat products and other traditional dishes popular in Spain. And, of course, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy excellent Spanish wines and champagne here. The market also houses a bookstore with a wide variety of gastronomic and culinary books and a designer kitchen utensil store.
The market pavilions are located on two floors and occupy 1200 square meters in total.
