Description of the attraction
The Academy of Fine Arts is a state university of fine and applied arts. This is the institution of higher education in Warsaw.
In 1816, the University of Warsaw created the Department of Fine Arts under the guidance of the renowned professors Marcello Baciarelli and Sigmund Vogel. In 1831, the University of Warsaw collapsed, and the Russian authorities decided to create a School of Fine Arts. Students of this school took an active part in patriotic demonstrations and in the January Uprising, which led to the closure of the school. However, the interest in the visual arts was so great that a drawing class was created under the guidance of Tsiprian Lakhnitsky. In 1920, it was decided to expand the class to the school of painting and arts and crafts. In 1932 the school was transformed into the Academy of Arts.
After the end of World War II in 1945, the academy was reopened, and in 1957 it was renamed the Academy of Fine Arts.
The academy currently has the following faculties: Painting, Graphic Arts, Design, Interior Design, Sculpture, Art Restoration, Management Culture, and the Faculty of Arts, Media and Stage Design.
Chopin lived in one of the outbuildings of the Academy in 1826, which is reminiscent of a memorial plaque and a museum.
