Description of the attraction

Belvedere Palace is the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy, Field Marshal who saved Vienna from the Turks. In 1725, the architect Lucas Hildebrandt completed the construction of this "little Versailles".

Palaces and museums

The ensemble includes two palaces: the Upper Belvedere and the Lower Belvedere, connected by regular French-style gardens. Fountains, stairs, statues, vases, pools - all create an impression of wealth and grandeur. The splendor of the baroque interiors delights and overwhelms.

Now the Upper Belvedere houses the Austrian Gallery with an exhibition of art from the 19th and 20th centuries. It houses the world's largest collection of works by Gustav Klimt. The Lower Belvedere houses the Baroque Museum and the Museum of Medieval Art. The Mirror Cabinet deserves special attention: it is a richly decorated baroque hall with a statue of Prince Eugene of Savoy by Balthazar Permozero.

It is interesting

  • The Upper Belvedere was heavily rebuilt, but the Baroque Palace Chapel in one of the towers has survived.
  • The terrace of the Upper Belvedere offers a wonderful view of Vienna.
  • In the Upper Belvedere, there is a cozy cafe where you can taste delicious Viennese coffee and traditional pastries on the veranda overlooking the park.
  • If you leave Central Park near the Upper Belvedere, you can get to the University Botanical Garden, which was once the private garden of Prince Eugene of Savoy.
